Employee Spotlight with Bianca Gorospe
Today is the final day of February, marking the last day of Black History Month. Earlier this month, Offleash Media Strategist Bianca Gorospe interviewed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Leader Graci Harkema about what Black History Month means to her, the importance of storytelling in DEI efforts, and how we can all be better allies to each other. To close out the month, we’re checking in with Bianca to learn about how she defines DEI.
1) What is your definition of DEI?
To me, DEI means creating a safe environment that welcomes all walks of life. DEI is not a “one and done” thing or something that can be part-time; it’s something that we continuously need to work on together to make society a better place for everyone.
2) How can we become more aware of our own biases?
In my eyes, almost everyone has some sort of existing biases. Whether they’re subconscious or not, it’s important to recognize that your biases exist. Whether you make a mental note, write them down in a journal, or even talk through them with a professional, it’s key to recognize where these come from, why they came to be, and what you’re doing to change those biases.
3) What can we do to expand our understanding of DEI?
Closely listen to others when they bravely share their stories, read up on the latest news, volunteer for/donate to organizations that you normally wouldn’t think to, and watch documentaries that highlight real experiences and hardships.
4) What advice do you have for those who want to be allies and aren’t sure how to start?
The act of listening goes so far. It sounds like such a simple thing, but can mean the world to someone else!
